Arcangelo Piai

Photography entered my life when I was fifteen, and I told my parents with great determination that I wanted to be a photographer. Since I was a child, I have been passionate about beautiful images and the splendid reportages by the masters of photography published at the time in the weekly magazine Epoca. I was struck by the stories of places told through words, and I was captivated by the images.

I must confess a small secret: it was actually a film that sparked my interest: ‘Roman Holiday’. It was about a photographer. I told myself that this was my path and enrolled at the Scuola Radio Elettra Torino, a correspondence school that provided me with the basics and my first hopes, guiding me to learn the techniques of photographic development and printing.

Enrolling was actually the official excuse to buy technical equipment and bring it home, which would have otherwise been impossible as my parents would not have allowed it. At 23, I took flight, starting my career as a professional photographer and initially opening a studio in a partnership. For a few years, I worked as an employee, but since 1999, I have relied on my own VAT registration to provide me with an income and a job, taking on the costs of my studio—the one where I still work today, in Susegana.
